Tesla Recalls 362,758 Full Sel-Driving Beta Vehicles Under NHTSA Pressure

The Recall Will be Fixed Via OTA Software Update

Tesla, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall for certain Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y vehicles that have installed or are pending installation of a software release that contains the Autosteer on City Streets feature, also known as “Full Self-Driving Beta” or “FSD Beta.”

The recall affects an estimated 362,758 vehicles manufactured between September 9, 2016, and January 31, 2023, with an estimated 100% of these vehicles having the defect. The defect relates to the FSD Beta feature, an SAE Level 2 driver support feature that provides steering and braking/acceleration support to the driver under certain operating limitations.

In certain rare circumstances and within the operating limitations of FSD Beta, the feature could potentially infringe upon local traffic laws or customs while executing certain driving maneuvers, including traveling or turning through certain intersections during a stale yellow traffic light, the perceived duration of the vehicle’s static position at certain intersections with a stop sign, adjusting vehicle speed while traveling through certain variable speed zones, and negotiating a lane change out of certain turn-only lanes to continue traveling straight. These actions could potentially increase the risk of a collision if the driver does not intervene.

As part of the remedy, Tesla will deploy an over-the-air (OTA) software update at no cost to the customer. The OTA update, which is expected to be deployed in the coming weeks, will improve how FSD Beta negotiates certain driving maneuvers during the conditions described above.

Tesla plans to notify all Tesla stores and service centers on or shortly after February 16, 2023, and owner notification letters will be mailed. The planned owner notification date is April 15, 2023.

While Tesla is not aware of any serious accidents related to this defect, it has identified 18 warranty claims, received between May 8, 2019, and September 12, 2022, that may be related to the conditions described above. Tesla, however, disagrees with NHTSA report but has decided to administer a voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution.
