Google is introducing new generative AI-powered features to its Workspace productivity suite, aimed at helping users create, connect, and collaborate more effectively. The company has been building helpful products for more than two decades, using AI to develop features such as Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and malware and phishing protection.
Now, Google is incorporating generative AI as a collaborative partner to deliver on Workspace’s mission of connecting people to create, build and grow together.
The new generative AI experiences will be rolled out to trusted testers on a rolling basis throughout the year, before being made available to the public.
The features will include the ability to draft, reply, summarize, and prioritize emails in Gmail; brainstorm, proofread, write, and rewrite in Docs; auto-generate images, audio, and video in Slides; auto-completion, formula generation, and contextual categorization in Sheets; and workflow enablement in Chat.
The first set of AI-powered features will help users get started writing in Docs and Gmail, using generative AI to instantly create a draft when a user types a topic. Users will be able to continue to refine and edit the content with the help of AI-generated suggestions.
In addition, new generative AI capabilities will help users rewrite content and adopt different tones and styles in their writing. The products will be designed in accordance with Google’s AI Principles, allowing users to remain in control of the content while AI makes suggestions that they can accept, edit, and change.
Google’s goal is to deliver the full potential of generative AI across Workspace, and the company will launch the new experiences this month via its trusted tester program, starting with English in the United States.
Google will then iterate and refine the features before making them available more broadly to consumers, small businesses, enterprises, and educational institutions in more countries and languages. With these new capabilities, Workspace users will be able to collaborate more effectively and achieve their goals more efficiently.
