A Rivian R1T electric pickup truck caught fire while charging at an Electrify America station in Mill Valley, California, on June 6, 2023. The incident was initially reported by a Reddit user who shared a photo of the charred vehicle. Rivian and Electrify America are currently conducting investigations to determine the cause of the fire.
The photograph indicates that the fire originated near the front driver side of the truck, close to the charge port. As a result, the flames severely damaged the hood, windshield, and roof of the vehicle, while also reaching the top of the charging station. However, Rivian’s initial assessment suggests that the battery pack itself was not involved in the fire.
This unfortunate event is not the first time an electric vehicle has caught fire while charging at an Electrify America station. In a separate incident in March 2023, a Volkswagen ID4 SUV allegedly caught fire at an EA station in Tracy, California. These incidents have raised concerns regarding the potential for Electrify America’s chargers to cause damage or ignite electric vehicles.
It is worth noting that Rivian has faced previous incidents related to battery fires. In May 2023, a battery pack caught fire within the company’s factory, but fortunately, the fire was contained. Despite these incidents, Rivian remains highly anticipated as one of the leading electric vehicle startups, with plans to release its R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV later this year.
Although electric vehicles generally offer a higher level of safety compared to their gasoline-powered counterparts, they are not completely immune to fire risks. Battery-related issues have led to fires or recalls in models such as the Chevy Bolt EV and the Jaguar I-Pace. Consequently, it is crucial to thoroughly investigate the causes behind these fires and implement preventive measures to ensure such incidents are avoided in the future.
