Lionel Messi Joins Inter Miami

A Game-Changer for US Soccer

Lionel Messi, widely regarded as the greatest soccer player of all time, has sent shockwaves through the world of soccer with his announcement of joining Inter Miami, the MLS club co-owned by David Beckham. The 35-year-old Argentine superstar, who recently led his country to its first World Cup title in 36 years, revealed his decision in exclusive interviews with Spanish media outlets Mundo Deportivo and Sport on Wednesday.

In a surprising turn of events, Messi opted for Miami over other options, including a return to his lifelong club Barcelona, which he left in 2021 due to a contract dispute. He also turned down a lucrative offer from a Saudi Arabian team, reported to be a staggering $1 billion for a two-year deal. Messi explained that he was drawn to the United States to experience a different kind of soccer and lifestyle, and was captivated by the project and vision of Inter Miami.

The significance of Messi’s move to Inter Miami cannot be overstated. It is a massive coup for the MLS, which has been striving to attract global stars and elevate its popularity and relevance in the soccer world. With a remarkable record of seven Ballon d’Or awards, six European Golden Shoes, 10 La Liga titles, four Champions League trophies, and numerous individual records and honors, Messi’s presence will undoubtedly raise the league’s profile to new heights. Having scored over 800 goals for club and country, including 102 for Argentina, he culminated his illustrious career by lifting the coveted World Cup trophy last December, triumphing over France in a thrilling final in Qatar.

Moreover, Messi’s arrival in Miami will breathe new life into Inter Miami, an expansion team that joined the MLS in 2020 but has struggled to make a significant impact on the field. Currently languishing at the bottom of the standings, the club has faced financial and legal challenges, including a $2 million fine for salary cap violations imposed by the MLS.

However, Messi’s signing has the potential to transform Inter Miami’s fortunes. His unprecedented star power will attract attention, excitement, and revenue to the club and the league. According to Forbes, Messi’s deal with Inter Miami includes a percentage of sales from Apple’s MLS Season Pass, a share of Inter Miami’s shirt sales, and an ownership stake in the club. This comes as part of a groundbreaking 10-year, $2.5 billion deal between Apple and MLS to exclusively stream all MLS matches in the United States and Canada, which commenced on February 1, 2023.

While the exact date of Messi’s debut for Inter Miami is yet to be confirmed, it is anticipated to take place in July after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires on June 30. During his stint at PSG, Messi helped the French club secure two Ligue 1 titles and reach the Champions League semifinals twice. Reflecting on his time in Paris, Messi expressed gratitude to PSG while emphasizing the need for a new challenge.

“I am immensely grateful to PSG for everything they have given me,” Messi conveyed to Sport. “I had two fantastic years there, but I felt the urge for a change of scenery and a fresh experience. The allure of playing in the MLS always intrigued me, and when Inter Miami showed interest, I did not hesitate.”

Upon joining Inter Miami, Messi will reunite with former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez, who joined the club from Atletico Madrid last month. Excited about the prospect of playing alongside Suarez again, Messi also expressed his admiration for Beckham, who will serve as his mentor and advisor.
