Volvo Expands Electric Lineup with Upcoming EM90 Minivan

The EM90 will be powered by a dual-motor powertrain that produces 534 horsepower.

Swedish automaker Volvo is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the upcoming launch of the all-new EM90 minivan. Scheduled to debut in 2024, the EM90 will be Volvo’s first fully electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and will compete with premium electric minivans like the Mercedes EQV.

Platform and Powertrain

The Volvo EM90 will ride on the Geely SEA modular platform which also underpins the Zeekr 009 EV. This architecture allows for different battery sizes and all-electric powertrains. The EM90 is expected to come with two battery pack options – a 116kWh pack and a 140kWh option.

The minivan will feature a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain producing around 534 horsepower. The 116kWh battery will deliver an estimated driving range of 436 miles while the 140kWh battery will provide up to 511 miles on a single charge based on the CLTC cycle. These ranges are on par with the Zeekr 009 EV.

Interior and Features

As an MPV, the Volvo EM90 minivan will offer three rows of seating and generous cargo capacity. Expect a versatile seating layout and plenty of premium materials inside the cabin. The EV is also likely to come equipped with luxury amenities like a panoramic sunroof, high-end audio system, and hands-free power tailgate.

The EM90 will feature Volvo’s latest connectivity tech and advanced driver assistance systems. It is expected to come with support for fast charging which should allow the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in around 40 minutes. Safety will be a priority, with systems like collision avoidance and road condition alerts.

Launch Timeframe

Volvo will initially launch the EM90 minivan in China where it has seen great success with electrified models like the XC40 Recharge. The automaker hasn’t officially confirmed plans to introduce the EV in other markets, but that remains a possibility depending on initial reception and demand.

Pricing details are also unclear for now, but expect a base price tag around $60,000 considering the premium positioning and long driving range. The EM90 will give eco-conscious families a viable electric people mover option when it launches in 2024.
