Volvo Unveils First Electric Minivan – The EM90

New model offers range, performance and luxury for the eco-conscious family

Stockholm – November 14, 2023. Volvo has unveiled its first all-electric minivan, the EM90, in a move that marks a major milestone for the company as it transitions towards an entirely electrified lineup. Described by Volvo as a “living room on the move”, the EM90 combines luxury, sustainability, and ample interior space, offering a glimpse into the future of electric family vehicles.

Primarily designed for the Chinese market, the EM90 boasts an impressive estimated range of over 450 miles (738 km) according to China’s CLTC standards. This positions the minivan as a competitive long-range option in the EV space, helping alleviate range anxiety. Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor producing up to 200kW, enabling 0-100km/h acceleration in 8.3 seconds. The EM90 also features bidirectional charging, allowing it to not only draw power but also supply it back to the grid.

Keeping with Volvo’s trademark boxy silhouette, the EM90 emphasizes interior comfort and space. The living room philosophy points to a focus on creating a welcoming, spacious cabin ideal for families. From the outset, the EM90 is strategically positioned to tap into the growing trend towards sustainable electric vehicles globally. While launching first in China, Volvo views the model as central to their vision for the future of luxury EVs.

“The EM90 represents an exciting new chapter for Volvo as we continue transitioning to a fully electric portfolio,” said Volvo CEO X. “This minivan highlights our commitment to innovation and meeting the demands of the rapidly evolving EV marketplace. We envision the EM90 as integral to the future of sustainable luxury mobility.”

The reveal of the all-electric EM90 minivan signifies Volvo’s embrace of electrification and its push to adapt its offerings to a marketplace increasingly focused on efficiency and sustainability. The model introduces technologies and design that will likely influence Volvo’s future EV efforts.
