Andrej Karpathy, a renowned computer scientist and researcher in the field of artificial intelligence and deep learning, has returned to OpenAI, the company behind the popular language model ChatGPT. Karpathy originally joined OpenAI over five years ago as a neural net and computer vision expert, but his expertise and experience soon led him to become a top executive at Tesla, where he transformed the Autopilot system into the advanced FSB beta we know today.
In 2022, Karpathy took a four-month sabbatical with the intention of returning to Tesla, but ultimately announced his retirement from the company to pursue other opportunities. However, his passion for AI and deep learning has brought him back to OpenAI.
On Twitter, Karpathy shared the news of his return, saying, “Some personal news: I am joining OpenAI (again :)). Like many others both in and out of AI, I am inspired by the impact of their work and have personally benefited from it. The future potential is especially exciting, and it is a great pleasure to jump back in and build.”
OpenAI was co-founded by Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, with the aim of democratizing AI. However, due to conflicts of interest, Musk recused himself from the board of directors, which ultimately led to Karpathy’s move to Tesla’s AI division.
Karpathy’s return to OpenAI appears to be welcomed by the company’s staff , as he brings with him a wealth of expertise and experience in artificial intelligence and deep learning. With his leadership, OpenAI is poised to continue pushing the boundaries of AI and building cutting-edge technologies that will shape the future.
