Avatar 2: The Way of Water has become the highest grossing film of 2022, surpassing Top Gun: Maverick at the box office. The film, which was highly anticipated due to its status as a sequel to the highest grossing film of all time, had a bit of a slow start in its opening weekend, but has since taken in $1.48 billion globally, making it the 10th highest grossing film in history.
Its success is largely due to increased Imax ticket prices and repeat viewings. The film’s strong performance will likely lead to the release of the planned Avatar 3 in December 2024, as well as the fourth and fifth films in the series. To surpass Spider-Man: No Way Home as the biggest global release of the pandemic era, The Way of Water will need to reach $1.9 billion. If it makes $2 billion, it will be the first film to do so since the start of the COVID pandemic.
Cameron also revealed that Avatar 3 is already complete and in post-production, while Avatar 4 and 5 are both written and have already begun production. All three movies are currently scheduled for release in the coming years.
