Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) shortage is over, stating that “everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward.” The company also revealed that it has sold approximately 30 million consoles to date, which is approximately 5 million more than the last time it released sales figures in November.
The PS5 launched in November 2020 and was difficult to find for most of its lifespan, often requiring buyers to be lucky, on top of drops, or willing to pay scalpers or retailers significantly more than the MSRP. Recently, the main way to purchase the console was through a $550 bundle that included the PS5 with disk drive and a game. Sony has faced challenges in meeting the high demand for the console due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it remains to be seen if the company will face similar availability issues when the PlayStation VR2 headset is released in February.
