Meta Platforms, the overarching parent company of social media behemoths like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has taken a substantial leap into the burgeoning field of virtual reality (VR) by unveiling a new subscription service designed for its array of VR headsets. Named Meta Quest+, this service offers users the opportunity to download a pair of VR games each month, handpicked and curated by the Meta team.
Priced at $7.99 monthly or $59.99 annually, the service is compatible across the spectrum of Meta’s VR headsets, including the Quest 2, Quest Pro, and the highly anticipated upcoming release of the Quest 3.
The initiation of Meta Quest+ underscores Meta’s strategy to shape and influence the emergent, yet heavily-invested VR market, whilst concurrently enhancing the immersive metaverse experience for its user base. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, articulated that the subscription service would offer a diverse range of VR games, spanning numerous genres and styles, from action-packed adventures to intricate puzzles and realistic simulations.
He also highlighted that subscribers of Meta Quest+ could look forward to exclusive content and benefits in future updates. In the rapidly expanding VR landscape, Meta is up against formidable competition from other tech titans, notably Apple, which recently debuted its premium $3,499 augmented reality headset, dubbed the Vision Pro.
However, Meta has strategically positioned its VR headsets as a more accessible alternative, with the Quest 2 and Quest Pro priced at $299.99 and $999.99 respectively. In a bid to attract a broader user base to its VR platform, Meta implemented a price cut on its VR headsets back in March.
Starting Monday, Meta Quest+ will be accessible in a selection of regions, with plans for swift expansion into additional territories. Potential users have the opportunity to test the service with a free 14-day trial before deciding on a subscription. As per Meta’s announcement, the inaugural pair of games available for Meta Quest+ subscribers include Moss, a whimsical fantasy adventure featuring a heroic mouse, and The Room VR: A Dark Matter, an intriguing puzzle game set in an enigmatic universe.
