Rivian, the electric truck and SUV company backed by Amazon, has announced that it will join Ford and GM in adopting Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its vehicles starting in 2025 .
This means that Rivian drivers will be able to use Tesla’s Supercharger network, which has over 12,000 stations in the US and Canada, as well as Rivian’s own Adventure Network, which is currently under development.
NACS is a charging connector developed by Tesla that allows for fast and efficient charging of electric vehicles. It was previously exclusive to Tesla vehicles, but the company recently opened its Supercharger network to other EV makers that adopt the NACS port. Ford was the first to announce its partnership with Tesla in May 2023, followed by GM and now Rivian.
Rivian CEO and founder RJ Scaringe said that the adoption of NACS will enable Rivian customers to leverage Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network while continuing to build out its own Rivian Adventure Network . He also expressed his excitement to work with Tesla and help advance the world toward carbon neutrality .
Rivian is expected to start delivering its R1T pickup and R1S SUV models later this year, after several delays due to the pandemic and supply chain issues. The company has also secured orders from Amazon for 100,000 electric delivery vans, which are expected to hit the roads by 2025. Rivian plans to incorporate the NACS port as standard equipment on its R1 vehicles beginning in 2025, and its upcoming R2 platform thereafter .
