SpaceX has recently announced a new option for its Starlink satellite internet service: Starlink Roam. This option allows customers to use Starlink in different locations around the world where the service is available, without being tied to a specific region or continent.
Starlink Roam replaces the previous Starlink for RVs option, which was limited to the same continent as the customer’s registered shipping address.
Now, customers can choose between a regional subscription for $150 per month or a global subscription for $200 per month. Both subscriptions are billed in one-month increments and can be paused and un-paused at any time.
According to SpaceX, Starlink Roam is ideal for customers travelling to locations where connectivity has been unreliable or completely unavailable. The company says that it is working to expand its satellite network and coverage, but warns that customers may experience brief periods of poor connectivity or none at all while travelling.
To use Starlink Roam, customers need to purchase either a portable hardware kit for $599 or an in-motion hardware kit for $2,500. The portable kit is designed for easy setup and breakdown at any destination where Starlink has active coverage. The in-motion kit is designed for permanent installation on a vehicle and allows users to enjoy high-speed internet while on the go.
Starlink Roam is currently available in select markets where SpaceX has obtained regulatory approvals. Customers can check the availability of Starlink Roam on the company’s website or app before ordering.
Starlink Roam is another milestone for SpaceX’s ambitious project to provide global broadband access using thousands of low-Earth orbit satellites. The company has already launched over 1,800 satellites and plans to launch more in the coming months. As of March 2023, Starlink has over 500,000 active users across 25 countries.
