Tokyo, Japan – Subaru has announced it will adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its upcoming electric vehicles. Starting in 2025, new Subaru EVs launched in North America will be equipped with NACS ports, giving drivers access to Tesla’s vast Supercharger fast charging network.
The move makes Subaru the latest major automaker to join the NACS platform, following recent commitments by Ford, GM, Hyundai, and others. Industry experts see this as a huge step towards widespread EV charging standardization in North America.
For Subaru drivers, the adoption of NACS removes a big barrier to EV adoption – range anxiety. With access to Tesla’s network of over 40,000 Superchargers in North America, Subaru EV drivers will enjoy reliable fast charging on long road trips.
Tesla also stands to benefit, as more NACS-compatible vehicles will increase utilization of their industry-leading Supercharger network. Lower congestion at stations will improve the charging experience for all drivers.
Subaru plans to provide NACS charging adapters for older models, enabling all Subaru EV drivers to access the Tesla charging infrastructure. Other automakers have announced similar retrofit plans.
Overall industry observers see Subaru’s announcement as validation of NACS as the de facto standard for EV fast charging in North America. As more automakers join the platform, an interoperable network of chargers will take shape, removing a major barrier to mass EV adoption.
