Tesla Launches More Affordable Standard Range Models for Model S and Model X

The Standard Range models are available for order now, and deliveries are expected to begin in September or October 2023.

Palo Alto, CA – Tesla has announced new Standard Range versions of its flagship Model S sedan and Model X SUV, offering buyers a more affordable way to get into the company’s luxury electric vehicles.

Unveiled on Wednesday, the Standard Range Model S starts at $78,490 while the Standard Range Model X starts at $88,490. This represents a $10,000 price drop compared to the previous base versions of both models.

According to Tesla, the Standard Range Model S can achieve an EPA-estimated range of 320 miles on a single charge, while the Model X is rated for 269 miles of range. This is less than the Long Range variants, which offer 405 miles and 348 miles respectively.

All Standard Range models are powered by Tesla’s proven electric powertrain, utilizing the same battery pack and dual motor setup. However, range is software-limited compared to the Long Range cars. Buyers can also opt to pay $10,000 more to unlock the full performance and range capabilities.

“We are excited to expand access to Model S and Model X with new Standard Range options,” said a Tesla spokesperson. “These variants provide many of the same great features and performance of Model S and Model X at a more affordable price point.”

The introduction of the more affordable Standard Range models appears aimed at making Tesla’s technology and brand more accessible. It may also help attract customers weighing electric options like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Rivian R1S SUV.

Standard Range Model S and Model X vehicles can be ordered now online. First deliveries are expected to arrive for buyers in late September and early October. It remains to be seen how well these lower-priced variants will sell compared to the Long Range models.
