Tesla Launches New Home Charging Plan for EV Owners

\For just $25 per month, Tesla drivers can charge up every night without worrying about electricity costs

Tesla has introduced a new electricity plan called Tesla Electric that is designed specifically for Tesla vehicle owners. The plan allows customers to charge their EVs overnight at home for a low monthly fee.

How the Tesla Electric Plan Works

With the Tesla Electric Home Charging Plan, customers pay $25 per month for unlimited overnight EV charging between 10pm and 6am. During these overnight hours, customers can charge their Tesla vehicles as much as needed without incurring any additional electricity costs.

Outside of the overnight window, EV charging and general home electricity use is billed at a flat rate. This daytime rate is usually lower than standard electricity rates.

The plan is currently only available in Texas, where consumers have the ability to choose retail electricity providers. To qualify, Tesla owners must live in an area serviced by Tesla Electric.

Benefits for Tesla Owners

The main benefit of the plan is providing low-cost overnight EV charging. For just $25 per month, Tesla drivers can charge up every night without worrying about electricity costs. This makes owning an EV more affordable.

The plan also encourages EV owners to charge during off-peak hours when electricity demand is lower. This helps balance the electrical grid.

Tesla Electric bills separate home energy use from EV charging. This allows customers to track charging costs and optimize when they charge their vehicles.

The Tesla app enables users to manage their Tesla Electric bills. They can adjust autopay settings, make a one-time payment, and view statements or payment history. The bill includes details of daytime and overnight energy usage for vehicle charging, home energy usage, Transmission and Delivery (TDSP) fees, and taxes.

For each vehicle enrolled in the plan, users will pay a daily fixed fee of $0.83 (which adds up to $25 over 30 days). However, the final fee will depend on the exact length of the billing period. This fee covers all vehicle charging performed overnight and any associated TDSP fees. Energy used for powering the home throughout the day and charging the vehicle outside overnight hours will appear on the bill at the usual home electricity rate.

How to Sign Up

Tesla owners can enroll directly through the Tesla mobile app. After entering their address, customers can select a start date, the number of vehicles to enroll, and setup autopay.

Once approved, the Tesla Electric plan starts within a few hours or days. Customers receive billing through the Tesla app and can manage payments online.

The Future of EV Charging Plans

As EVs continue to grow in popularity, innovative charging plans like Tesla Electric will help lower the cost of ownership. This can encourage more drivers to go electric while also supporting the electrical grid. More utilities may start offering special EV owner electricity rates to attract new customers.

Tesla’s home charging plan provides a model of how utilities can incentivize off-peak EV charging. As charging infrastructure expands, we’ll likely see more programs, tools, and rates designed around the needs of EV drivers.
