The Tesla Model Y has emerged as the best-selling car in Europe for Q1 2023, beating out all gasoline-powered vehicles in addition to its electric counterparts. According to data from JATO Dynamics, the Model Y saw a remarkable 179% increase in sales compared to the same period last year, selling more units than the Dacia Sandero and the Peugeot 208 superminis which completed the top three spots across 27 European markets.
While Tesla’s flagship sedan, the Model 3, saw a 40% decline in sales for the same period, the Model Y’s impressive performance highlights a growing preference for SUVs among European buyers. The increase in Model Y registrations in Europe is particularly noteworthy, as the electric SUV jumped 30 spots from the 31st position in Q1 2022 to take the top spot in March 2023.
Despite Tesla’s success, Volkswagen was the best-selling brand overall, finishing ahead of Toyota and Peugeot. However, with the largest share (22%) in BEV registrations, Tesla has cemented its position as a leading electric vehicle manufacturer in Europe.
Fully electric cars accounted for 13.4% of total new car registrations in Europe in Q1 2023, marking the highest-ever first-quarter performance for BEVs. This milestone reflects a growing shift towards sustainable transportation options and a promising outlook for the electric vehicle market.
Tesla’s success in achieving impressive sales figures without relying on traditional advertising only adds to the remarkable feat. Additionally, the Model Y’s manges to outsell cheaper gasoline car competitors. This is a signal to European manufacturers that they need to step up their game if they want to compete with Tesla on their home turf.
