NortonLifeLock (formerly Symantec Corporation) the cybersecurity company that provides a range of products and services to protect consumers and businesses from online threats such as viruses, malware, and hackers has disclosed that a significant number of customer accounts have been impacted by a data breach.
The parent company of NortonLifeLock, Gen Gitital, has stated that the recent data breach is believed to have been caused by a method called “credential stuffing.” In this type of attack, hackers use previously exposed passwords to try to gain access to multiple accounts. The company noticed a large number of unsuccessful login attempts on December 12, 2022, and believes that the affected accounts date back to December 1st.
The Cyber security company sent notices to over 6,000 customers whose accounts had been hacked, warning that personal information such as names, phone numbers, and addresses may have been accessed, and that passwords stored in the password manager feature may have also been compromised.
In addition, customers were advised to enable multi-factor authentication to protect their accounts, which works by sending a verification prompt or code to another device, such as a smartphone, via SMS or a dedicated authenticator app.
