Detroit, MI (November 16, 2023) – Volkswagen has initiated a full recall of its 2023-2024 ID.4 electric SUV models in the United States, totaling 23,883 vehicles, due to concerns about the flammability of interior sunshade materials.
The recall stems from an internal “Conformity of Production” test conducted by Volkswagen in May, which revealed inconsistencies in meeting Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 302 for flammability of interior materials. Specifically, the roller sunshade material was not consistently compliant with the requirements that aim to reduce fire risks inside vehicles.
Following the discovery, Volkswagen worked with its supplier, Automotive Mexico Body Systems, for additional testing that confirmed the variances. The sunshade material had previously met flammability standards before ID.4 production began. As of August 1, 2023, Volkswagen reoriented the material in its production process, so the exterior side now faces inward, resolving the issue for new vehicles.
For ID.4 models already delivered, Volkswagen will start contacting owners on January 5, 2024 to bring vehicles into dealerships. Dealers will apply a flame retardant fabric to the sunshades at no cost to mitigate potential fire hazards. Volkswagen stated the recall is precautionary, as no injuries or incidents related to the issue have been reported.
The recall covers all 2023-2024 ID.4s sold in the U.S. market to date, approximately 23,883 vehicles. The comprehensive action underscores Volkswagen’s commitment to proactive safety measures and compliance with federal standards aimed at reducing fire risks and protecting occupants. Owners affected by the recall will receive more details by mail in early January.
