Menlo Park, CA – Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted a scathing review of Apple’s new Vision Pro headset on Instagram earlier today. In the post, Zuckerberg used a Meta Quest 3 headset to directly compare the two devices, ultimately concluding that the Quest is the “better product, period” for most consumer uses.
Zuckerberg slammed the Vision Pro’s steep $3,500 price tag, calling the Quest “seven times less expensive” and a better value. He claimed the Quest has a wider field of view, brighter screen, and crisper visuals during head movement. While acknowledging the Vision Pro’s higher screen resolution, Zuckerberg criticized compromises to comfort and wearability.
The post also took jabs at the Vision Pro’s smaller apps library compared to the Quest store. Zuckerberg highlighted the Quest’s access to popular apps like YouTube and Xbox, which are not yet available on the Vision Pro.
Zuckerberg ended by framing the devices as embodiments of open (Quest) versus closed (Vision Pro) models in computing. He expressed a desire for Meta’s “open” approach to dominate the nascent mixed reality space, comparing potential outcomes to the PC battles between Microsoft and Apple decades ago.
The aggressive targeting of Vision Pro comes amidst increasing competition between Meta and Apple in immersive devices and monetization of the metaverse concept. Zuckerberg has been explicit about his goal for the Quest to overtake Apple’s newly unveiled headset. His Instagram post signals an intense rivalry likely to play out between the tech giants in coming years.
